Harsher Punishment For Catalytic Converter Thieves


Catalytic converter thefts are just one of the many types of vehicle crimes that have skyrocketed over the past several years. Now, there is a greater punishment for criminals who steal catalytic converters.

The St. Paul City Council has passed a measure that would make it a misdemeanor to possess a catalytic converter that is not attached to a motor vehicle. Officials hope the change will make it easier for police to prove whether a converter was stolen or not. It also requires anyone who has a detached one to provide a receipt or proof of purchase.
